It traces its origins to Typica plants brought from Jamaica to the former British protectorate of Nyasaland (now Malawi) in 1878, before being transplanted to Uganda in 1910. Today it is primarily cultivated by smallholder farmers on the slopes of Mount Elgon in the Bugisu sub-region of eastern Uganda, at elevations between 1,200 and 1,550 metres, often intercropped with bananas and shade trees in traditional agroforestry systems. The plants are tall with light bronze leaf tips, and produce slightly smaller beans than modern hybrid varieties. Nyasaland is prized for its intense floral aroma, delicate almond notes, and good cup quality, though it is susceptible to major coffee diseases.
